The power of a praying mother- Sheila Hinton.

James Odom Bolton, known as Jamie, is the second eldest among four siblings, born to Pastor James Bolton and Sheila Odom. His childhood took a turn when his parents separated shortly after he started elementary school, and his mother enlisted in the United States Army. Despite the disruption, Jamie remained a commendable student-athlete and maintained regular attendance at church, wherever he resided. His mother, now a minister, continues to wield significant influence in his life.

However, Jamie's narrative transcends the image of the obedient, respectful, and devout child he once was. Following the unexpected loss of his maternal grandmother, he spiraled into a life marked by darkness and self-destruction, resulting in the loss of his family, his liberty, and nearly his life.

For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; with favor You will surround him as with a shield.
— Psalm 5:12

Fast-forward to Jamie's 26th year, he finds himself in court facing severe drug charges. Despite assurances from his attorneys that he would likely receive probation or a maximum sentence of one year due to his clean record, the jury convicts him on two charges: possession with intent to sell and conspiracy. Shockingly, the judge sentences him to 10 years in prison. Jamie, now a father of two boys and a six-month-old daughter, grapples with the devastating reality of leaving his family behind and the anguish of facing his mother.

In prison, Jamie confronts his choices and begins to take responsibility for them. He turns to prayer, reading the word, and utilizing available training opportunities in the facility. Despite his dire circumstances, Jamie finds solace in his faith, recalling his mother's words, "God has the last say." He undergoes spiritual growth and begins to perceive God's favor even in confinement. His love for his family becomes his driving force, and he embraces an attitude of gratitude rather than self-pity.

During his incarceration, Jamie falls seriously ill with Nephrotic Syndrome, aggravated by inadequate healthcare in the facility. His condition deteriorates until he collapses in his cell, prompting emergency medical intervention. After recovering, Jamie learns of changes in sentencing guidelines under President Obama's administration, offering hope for a reduction in his sentence. Through his mother's persistent prayers and a stroke of grace, Jamie receives a significant reduction of 42 months, leading to his release in March 2014.

Reflecting on his journey, Jamie sees his time in prison as a divine purpose, redirecting him from a destructive path. Despite regrets, he is grateful for God's intervention and sees his experience as a platform to support others facing similar struggles. Embracing his calling to preach, Jamie eagerly anticipates this new chapter, aiming to inspire others with his testimony of God's favor and the transformative power of faith in Christ.
