Shelbretta Ball, affectionately known as Brett, is the youngest daughter of Mary Bolton and Carl Ball. During her teenage years, her mother took on a coaching role at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. Brett attended Jackson Academy, where she shone in academics and basketball, leading the Lady Raiders to consecutive division and state championships in her junior and senior years. Her outstanding dedication earned her a basketball scholarship to the University of South Carolina, under the mentorship of three-time Olympian, Dawn Staley. At Jackson Academy, Brett made history as the first African American student-athlete to secure a SEC athletic scholarship, marking the beginning of her journey towards realizing her ambition of becoming the first female LeBron James.

Arriving on campus filled with anticipation for summer classes and team training, Brett's excitement was soon tempered by an unsettling flutter in her chest during a walk to class. Despite attempting to dismiss it, her resting heart rate of 116 beats per minute prompted a visit to her trainer and subsequent medical evaluation. The diagnosis delivered was devastating: a heart condition that would forever bar her from competitive sports, including basketball.

While grappling with the harsh reality of this news, Brett's faith illuminated a deeper purpose beyond basketball. Upholding their commitment, the university continued Brett's full scholarship for her education. Inspired by the media department, she embraced a new avenue of expression through video production, ultimately hosting her own segment titled "Ballin' with Brett," offering viewers an exclusive glimpse into USC's women's basketball team on Fox Sports South.

In the wake of her basketball aspirations being dashed, Brett has redirected her dreams and achieved remarkable milestones. Engaging in endeavors such as serving on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, producing award-winning research and documentaries, interning with the New York Yankees, and working as a production assistant at Tyler Perry Studios.

An advocate for injured athletes facing similar challenges, Brett imparts wisdom garnered from her experiences: trust in God's plan, maintain faith amidst obstacles, and recognize that His design transcends our own aspirations. Brett has now completed 12 consecutive years of higher education and has received her PhD in 2023!
